Hong Kong’s short London Lane is near fishing village but it has no Buckingham Palace

Although it is named after the capital city of Great Britain, former British colony Hong Kong’s London Lane on the Ap Lei Chau Island has no Buckingham Palace or Big Ben?!

 

It is only a 30-meter short back alley with only two back doors of a grocery store and bakery between two old tenement buildings.

 

However, as it is easy to get there by MTR (Lei Tung Station Exit A1), you can still tour the nearby Aberdeen fishing village by yourself (TIY).

Just one-minute walk, you can reach the waterfront.

You can find two temples for the Fishermen to get protection from the deities related to the sea, the big Hung Shing Temple and the small Kwun Yum Temple.

 

Apart from the sea god, the cute cats are the spokesmen of the Hung Shing Temple.

 

You may walk to the colorful pontoon from the temples to take the public sampan boat to cross the harbor to go to Aberdeen.

 

During the boat ride, apart from enjoying the natural AC, i.e. the wind, you can see the beautiful fishing village culture.

You can see the fishermen working on their fishing boats.

 

You can also see the tall buildings on the Ap Lei Chau Island.

 

A lot of fishermen lived on the fishing boats in the typhoon shelter were resettled to those public housing buildings by the government in the past.

This makes Ap Lei Chau Island to be the world record island, the island with highest population density (150,000 people live on 1.3 Kilometre square island!).

It takes about two minutes for the sampan to go to Aberdeen.
