Typhoon shelter, which is for the small and medium-sized fishing boats, barges and yachts to take refuge during the strike of destructive storm, is a main part of the scenery of Hong Kong.

Aberdeen 

Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter is a natural bay between the southern part of Hong Kong Island and small Ap Lei Chau Island.

 

Chinese fishermen settled down there long before the arrival of the British in 1842.

The name of the city, Hong Kong, which means fragrant harbor, actually originates from this natural harbor, which was for exporting made in Hong Kong incense.

 

Apart from fishing boats and house boats, travelers can still see the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, a yacht club for the richest and the “concrete jungle”, which is made by the tall buildings on the two banks of the fishing harbor, at Aberdeen.

Causeway Bay

Back to the northern part of Hong Kong Island, there is the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter.

 

It was the first typhoon shelter built by the colonial government in 1883 to protect the survivors of the big storm.

The reclamation works reduced its size and ended its floating seafood sampan eatery business, which invented the famous, delicious and spicy Typhoon Shelter Stir-Fried Crab dish (photo below).

Although the floating Goddess of the Sea temple and some little fishing boats remain there, people can mostly see the big and luxurious yachts.

Actually Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter is right next to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

 

If travelers don’t want to do shopping at Causeway Bay, travelers can go to the typhoon shelter from the tunnel next to the World Trade Center to enjoy the nice view and see the noisy but funny “Noon Day Gun” at 1200 everyday.

 

Yau Ma Tei

Before the West Kowloon Reclamation, Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter, which was built by the colonial government in 1915 after another big typhoon, was also a large fishing village.

The Yau Ma Tei Goddess of the Sea Temple, Temple Street Market, the old shops on Shanghai Street and the restored Yau Ma Tei Theatre, which served the fishermen, are the living witnesses for the busy and prosperous floating fishermen community.

 

Now it is mainly a cargo handling area.

 

After shopping and dining at Olympic City, travelers can reach the typhoon shelter by the footbridges.

From the Hoi Fai Road Lookout Point, besides the barges and the sailors, travelers can see the tallest building of Hong Kong, ICC, and the nice sunset.

 

Kwun Tong

Different from Yau Ma Tei, Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter was a cargo handling area for the factories nearby in the past.

 

The old airport runway and breakwater blocked the normal sea water flow.

This caused the pollutants from the factories to accumulate.

Kwun Tong’s water quality was poor.

 

Hong Kong SAR Government’s Harbor Area Treatment Scheme and the removal of the factories makes Kwun Tong’s water clean again.

Under the Energizing Kowloon East Project, Kwun Tong Waterfront has been revitalized as a coastal leisure area.

 

Travelers can see the stunning Kai Tak Cruise Terminal and yachts on the Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter from the waterfront promenade.

 

Shau Kei Wan

Travelers can also take the local ferry at Kwun Tong Public Pier to go to Sai Wan Ho.

 

There is the Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter.

 

It is a lot smaller than before due to another reclamation work.

 

No more young men and young girls from the fishermen community sing their fishermen songs at night, which was recorded in the 1930s guidebook.

Travelers can still see the fishing boats to go fishing in the afternoon.

 

Travelers can enjoy the fresh fish ball noodle on Shau Kei Wan Main Street.

 

Travelers can still visit the Tam Kung Temple for the fishermen.
